Commonly used for maintenance and production welding of both heavy and light castings. It is extensively used for repairing cracks and breaks, filling surface defects and building up worn or missing parts where highest quality work is required a machinable deposit is a must.Cylinder heads, blocks, manifolds are a few applications.
Procedure
Remove all scale, rust, dirt and grease.Use All-State Chamfer Rod or other means to vee out joint to 80 degrees.Preheat casting to 800°F.(427°C.) A large tip with a neutral flame should be used.Hold torch so that inner cone is 1/8""(3.2mm) to 1/4""(6.4mm)from base metal, continue to heat until an area about 1"" in diameter turns a dull red;dip heated end of rod into All-State No.5 flux and apply a small amount of alloy.Flow each deposit out continuing to add alloy and flux. Each pass should not be more than 1/4""(6.4mm)thick. Continue welding until job has been completed. Allow to cool slowly by covering with an insulating material.
